Born January 19, 1932, in McComas, West Virginia, she was daughter of the late George and Pearl I. (Felious) Dudley.

Thelma Ann Swanson was a member of New Life Baptist Church in New Cumberland for a period that spanned two decades. Thelma Swanson's life centered around her faith in God, her family, and her church which nurtured her daily spiritual life and empowered her to be a nurturing force in her family and her community. She was truly a woman of substance who reached out to many children in the community who needed a watchful eye and a dose of tough love.

Thelma Ann Swanson was a wise woman as well as an educated woman. Around 1949, she attended Bluefield State College, Bluefield West Virginia, where she majored in Home Economics and realized another dream of womanhood when she pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
